Designing playing cards had long been on my to-do list... The goal was to create beautiful and practical cards that are fun to play with. The European mythology theme was clear from the start : ordinary kings, queens and jacks were replaced by gods and goddesses from the Nordic mythology. Do you recognise them? Their names are written in the runic letters on each one's left shoulder. The illustrations aren't perfect mirror images of each other – can you find the three differences?
In 2019, Riesen Design signed a contract with Noir Arts, a playing card producer and retailer. The Walhalla cards were launched in two different versions via Kickstarter. The first version, called Deck of Odin, used beautiful metallic inks and embossing.
Another limited edition – the Deck of Freyja – was printed on black paper and used golden ink for hearts and diamonds, silver ink for spades and clubs. This deck created a whole new look for the original design.
The campaign exceeded expectations so much (588 supporters and $19,247 raised) that we launched a third limited edition: the Deck of Valkyries. It's also printed on black paper, but features this time partially transparent holographic foil, four neon-coloured inks as well as a special ink which is only visible under UV light... The end result is a very unique deck of cards. The campaign for the third edition alone raised $17,482 from 483 supporters.
As an add-on to the campaign, we also created 12 amazing metal coins. There are the 12 gods on one side and their personal attributes on the other. The add-ons also included a two-deck and a three-deck box.
For the time being, you can order Walhalla playing cards directly from Riesen Design.
